Dried Orange and Citrus Slices: How to Use Them in Cocktails, Baking and Tea
Why dried orange, lemon and mandarin slices have become a favourite from bars to bakeries, and what to look for when you buy them wholesale.

Dried citrus slices are everywhere now, from cocktail menus to cake counters. The reason is simple: they look good, smell good, keep for a long time and need no preparation. Instead of slicing fresh oranges every day, waiting for them to dry or throwing away what is left, businesses save time and get a garnish that looks the same every time.
Cocktail and drink garnish
In bars and cafés, dried orange slices are used mostly as a glass garnish. They can replace fresh orange in classics like the Negroni, the Old Fashioned and the spritz, and they add a gentle citrus note to mulled wine, winter drinks and infused water. Dried lemon slices do the same job in gin and tonics, lemonades and iced teas.
Baking and chocolate
Patisseries use dried orange slices to decorate cakes and tarts, and in loaf cakes and cookies. Orange slices half-dipped in dark chocolate are one of the best-selling treats on any counter. Because the slices are low in moisture, they hold their shape on cream or chocolate.
Tea blends and granola
Dried mandarin, orange and lemon add both aroma and colour to herbal and fruit tea blends. Granola and muesli producers break the slices into small pieces and mix them in.
Decoration and gift boxes
Christmas decorations, door wreaths, candle and soap making, gift boxes: dried citrus slices are a natural, fragrant decorating material. Here too, a vivid colour and no mould depend on how well the fruit was dried.
What to check when buying wholesale
- Colour: Orange slices should be bright orange. Browning is a sign of too much heat or old stock.
- Whole slices: A low share of broken pieces and an even thickness help both presentation and portion control.
- Texture: A well-dried slice is crisp or slightly flexible, never sticky.
- Ingredients: Slices with added sugar or preservatives behave differently in drinks and bakes. Shemsana citrus slices are made from fruit only.
- Packaging: 15–30 g doypack pouches suit bars and cafés; cartons with 2.5 kg inner bags are more practical for production.
